Engineering Management

Operational improvement is not decided in an office. It is found on the floor, in the gap between how a process is described and how it is really performed.

We map the process as it exists — including the workarounds, the rework and the waiting that never appear in the documented version — and measure where time, material and capacity are actually going. In most operations the largest single loss is not in the step everybody blames; it is in the handover between steps.

Changes are made with the people who do the work, and are kept small enough to be verified. Quality is built into the process rather than inspected at the end, because inspection only tells you how much you have already lost. We stay until the new way is the normal way, not the way people revert from when things get busy.
